How to reset your energy to boost your productivity

About Time

A column on time management by productivity expert, Abigail Barnes, founder of The Time Management Podcast.

Recently I read Slow Productivity by Cal Newport and it got me thinking about how we’ve been raised toworship hustling, busyness and multi-tasking over planning, productivity and single focus. Finally, theresults are in, the science is available and we have started to come round to the idea: Pausing makes you more productive – and it’s not the same as stopping.

The relationship between pausing and productivity

Time is finite; there are a limited number of working hours available to us all, but your energy is rechargeable. When you learn how to harness and recharge your energy throughout the day, you’ll gainaccess to next level productivity and be able to achieve more in less time. Pausing gives your brain the opportunity to recalibrate and reset so by integrating pauses into your schedule, it will help you to create a sustainable and enjoyable routine.

Creating a schedule that works for you

Every single one of us has a different working style, preferences and energy requirements. The excitingthing about today’s world of work, is that more consideration than ever before is being given to theserequirements.

Organisations are becoming more inclusive, aware of neurodivergent learning styles and location preferences. By empowering professionals to design the schedule that works best for them and their deadlines or responsibilities, and allowing them to advocate for what they want and need, workers can fulfil their requirements while also fitting in family, leisure, and social commitments that are important for a healthy work-life balance. Entrepreneurs and freelancers are creating business and working in ways that do the same.
