Shrove Tuesday, pancake day, mardi gras… For many, it means a feast of pancakes. Add some different toppings and you can transform the humble pancake into a filling and delicious meal. These pancake topping ideas work anytime so why not make your work from home lunch a celebratory one?

Savoury pancake topping ideas

Here we have a few different ideas for something savoury. In these recipes, we are using the more crêpe-like pancakes. But if you the prefer a fluffier, American-style, some of these pancake topping ideas will work just as well. Make them your own. All these recipes are ideas that you can add to or adapt to suit your own tastes.

Bacon, corn and avo

This is a tasty combination of sweet and salty. It is also a delicious mix of crunchy, juicy and creamy textures.

Pancake Topping Ingredients:

  • Sweet corn (from a can)
  • 1/4 avocado sliced
  • 2 rashers bacon – grilled crispy

Simply layer the corn and avocado and top with two crispy rashers or bacon – fold the pancake and enjoy!

Prawn, mayo and avo

Succulent, juicy prawns combined with creamy mayonnaise and avocado make this a simple and different pancake filling. You can also add a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of rocket leaves for added greenery.

Pancake topping ingredients:

  • 4-5 cooked king prawns
  • 1/2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1/4 avocado sliced
  • Rocket leaves
  • Lemon juice

Top with the prawns and avocado slices, squeeze a dash of lemon juice, dollop on some mayonnaise, and add a few rocket leaves to taste. Fold or roll the pancake and enjoy!

Cheese and ham toastie twist

A cheese and ham toastie is a classic but why not change it up to a savoury pancake?

Pancake topping ingredients:

  • 2 thick ham slices – cut into pices
  • 100g grated cheese

Make the pancake and flip over to cook on the second side. While cooking, spread the pieces of ham over the pancake and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Once the cheese has melted and the pancake is cooked, remove from the pan and tuck in!

Cream cheese and salad

For something very simple and healthy, make your pancake the base to a simple salad. This adds some crunch and sweetness to your pancake. Fold or roll and even create a wrap alternative.

Pancake topping ingredients:

  • Cream cheese
  • Cucumber slices
  • Red pepper slices
  • Cherry tomatoes (halved)
  • Rocket leaves

Spread some cream cheese over half of your pancake. Top with all the salad ingredients and enjoy a crunchy, juicy wrap alternative.

The perfect lunch or brunch with these delicious pancakes filled with smoked salmon and dill.

Pancake topping ingredients:

  • 2 slices smoked salmon
  • Handful baby spinach leaves
  • 1 tbsp crème fraîche
  • Dill to serve

You can create these pancakes by simply layering the topping ingredients on your pancake and folding. The other option is to combine your spinach leaves into the pancake batter with a food mixer to make a green pancake!

Egg and spinach

Simple and tasty, and one that you can add to for something more interesting!

Pancake topping ingredients:

  • 1 fried egg
  • Handful baby spinach leaves
  • Grated cheese
  • Could add: ham pieces, mushrooms, diced pepper, sweetcorn

Simply add spinach leaves to your pancake and allow them to wilt with the heat under a fried egg. Add a sprinkle of grated cheese and any other toppings to taste.

When it comes to a sweet pancake, there is a host of options out there. Get creative and have fun with twists on your favourite desserts, or ice cream toppings.
