Creating a digital detox space for your home office

home office products for a digitadetox

We know how important a proper screen break is for our mental and physical health. Looking up and away from the screen and relieving eye strain is essential as part of our overall work day wellbeing. This is why the trend of creating a digital detox space in your home is one that many remote workers are embracing.

We have talked in different issues of the magazine, and in The Design Brief about zoning your workspace or using different areas of your home for different tasks. It allows you to move around and switch your environment, which can help with creativity and productivity. Have you considered one area that is device free? A space where you can switch off the digital noise and focus on you and your thoughts. It could be dedicated to wellbeing, or for work that doesn’t involve a screen.

Think a calming space for reading, writing, creative thinking, planning, dreaming, researching. It may be a simple chair, or you may have the luxury of a separate desk or table where you can go to journal and get the creative juices flowing.

What you need to create a digital detox space

This is really a sanctuary. This is not your main work desk where you have monitors and laptops. Think about what the purpose of this area will be. Will it be for wellbeing, for relaxation, for creative work?

Think plants, cushions, lamps and ambient lighting. You may include a yoga mat or towel, or you might want a cosy chair and a place for special items, precious photos, a vision board or other inspirational images that will fuel your creative process.

The process of innovation requires moments of collaboration but as talked about in this article, high achievers also require quiet periods of reflection. You can use this space to write with a pen, think without notifications or digital distractions.

Inspired by Pantone’s colour of 2025, which is Mocha Mousse (a colour for warmth, comfort and indulgence), we look at some ways you can create your own digital detox sanctuary in your home.
